I'm a wiry high school kid, heading into my senior year.
I'm wearing shorts, with socks pulled up to my knees. Thrift store shirts, Chucks, and trucker hats backwards at an angle.
I am not a kid who is interested in discovering 'old' music. But I am about to.
My favourite band at the time, is MXPX. Because of that, I am buying up everything they release - including It Came From Bremerton, a VHS they released covering their existence up to that point.
I was just expecting to see some behind the scenes band stuff, but the most important thing that came out of that was a name. That name? Elvis Costello.
On the VHS they discuss listening to the album This Years Model. I knew, in that moment, that I needed to check it out.
At this time, I discovered new music mainly through CD liner notes. This was kind of like that. My favourite band recommending something I should check out.
I didn't end up buying the album for a few more years, but the title always stuck with me.
After I received my first turntable, from my grandfather, This Years Model was on my list of 'must-have' records. In fact, it was the first record, along with the white album by The Beatles, that I went out and purchased.
